Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is currently out in the market looking to sign a new defender.

And multiple reports have claimed that the Gers boss has his eyes set on George Edmunson.

George Edmunson currently plays for Oldham and this season the League Two defender has caught the eye of many a top English clubs.

During the 2018-19 season, George Edmunson has made 54 appearances across all competitions and he is considered a prized asset by his club.

If reports are to be believed then a number of English suitors are after the signature of the centre-back but as things stand, the Gers are in pole position.

“A Rangers source has told Football Insider that the Glasgow giants are clear favourites to win the race for Edmundson’s signature as has been impressed by manager Steven Gerrard’s vision for the future.”

Reports have also suggested that Edmunson received a VIP tour of the Ibrox side’s Hummel Training Centre last week a couple of weeks ago which indicates that the 21-year-old also has his heart set on a move to the Glasgow club.

The defender is out of contract at Oldham in 2020 which means the Gers will have to shell out a fair amount of money to bring the defender to Ibrox and as per reports, Oldham want somewhere around £450,000 for the player.

But given that Gerrard is set to lose both Worrall and McAuley during the summer, spending the money on such a top defender should be an absolute no brainer for the Gers.

Especially since Oldham winger Lee Croft compared Edmunson with Burnley defender James Tarkowski.

“I’d probably compare him with James Tarkowski, who came through at Oldham and is now a big player for Burnley in the Premier League and gone on to play for England,” said Croft.

“Like James, George has played a lot of games in the lower divisions and really learned the game in a tough environment. He can go all the way like Tarko.”
