Liverpool take on Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday and before the game, the Lilywhites boss is busy singing praises about Virgil Van Dijk.

The Dutchman arrived at the club last year and Liverpool had to shell out somewhere around £75 million for his signature.

Immediately, Jurgen Klopp was met with a lot of criticism with many people claiming the German was trying to buy his way towards winning the Premier League title.

But now that we are coming towards the end of the 2018-19 season, Virgil Van Dijk has proved why the Reds chose to shell out so much money and right now the former Saints man is easily the best centre-back in world football.

And just a day before, Virgil Van Dijk takes on the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Spurs boss, Pochettino has hailed the defender as the best.

Pochettino said(as reported by the Metro): ‘When a team like Liverpool need to improve their team in a certain area, people said it was crazy to pay £70m for a centre-back.

‘But Liverpool were right. They picked Van Dijk, because at that moment they believed he was the best centre-back in England who could make them better, and they were right.

‘Some people said: ‘Why would you pay £70m for a centre-back?’ But the people who believed other things have now been shown that Liverpool were right.

‘If you are going to sign the player who is going to improve your team, then it is not a lot of money.

‘Because when you consider what it means to win a Champions League or a Premier League, it is cheaper to spend this type of money.’

Not many people have managed to go past Virgil Van Dijk this season and perhaps the only time the defender looked vulnerable this season was last week when German international Gnabry smoked past the Liverpool defender during an international fixture.

But Pochettino will be hoping the likes of Harry Kane and Son can do the same this Sunday when Spurs visit Anfield.
