Rangers FC came twice from behind to pick up a well-deserved point against Villarreal in the opening game of the Europa League.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw and every fan was pleased with how their team performed during the match with many claiming that this Rangers side has the capacity to go a long way in the tournament this campaign.

But manager Steven Gerrard clearly has other ideas.

Gerrard has outrightly claimed that success in the Scottish Premiership is of more importance to him rather than the Europa League.

“Sunday[St Johnstone match], in my eyes, is more important than Villarreal,” he said.

“I made it clear to the players when we came back after the international break, after the setback against Celtic, the league games are the priority.

“Obviously Villarreal was a very important game but for me, the league is the priority.”

The manager has also talked about the atmosphere at Ibrox as he hopes to build a fortress around the stadium.

“That is what we’re trying to achieve,” Gerrard said.

“That is not going to happen in two or three months. That will take a long time.

“We have to keep doing the right things, show our style. We’re better on the front foot, we’re better when we’re aggressive and play with intensity.

“A lot of teams at Ibrox have struggled when we’ve gone through the gears and really shown our best.

“Last night was our strongest performance considering the opposition, the stage, the setbacks. I thought we were terrific for 45 minutes.

“If we can carry that forwards to St Johnstone, I’m really looking forward to the performance. But the players have to go and deliver it.”

Rangers take on St Johnstone at home this weekend and Gerrard will be hoping to cut down that two-point gap with Celtic.
