Rangers FC striker Jermaine Defoe had recently told in an interview that in the 2020/21 season, his club’s primary focus will be to win a trophy and not stop their arch-rivals, Celtic from achieving a 10-in-a-row.

The former England international told talkSPORT: “Even when I first signed that[winning trophies] was the main goal, to be honest.

“At the end of the day, it’s not about stopping Celtic or whoever it is, it’s us becoming champions and doing something special as a group.

“It’s a massive football club and the demands is you have to win trophies, you look at all the great players before us and what they have achieved.

“If you’re not thinking along those lines then you shouldn’t be playing.”

Now former Rangers FC defender, Allan Hutton has lifted the lid on this topic by claiming that Defoe had to be politically correct but all of his club’s focus next season will be on stopping the Celtic juggernaut.

Hutton told Football Insider: “Oh, in my opinion, it is about stopping Celtic next season. I understand from a Rangers point of view you have to say the correct thing, I totally get that, but now that I’m a fan, it’s about stopping 10-in-a-row.

“I think if you were to ask Gerrard would you want a cup win or whatever or do you want to stop Celtic winning the league, that’s all he would take, he’d bite your hand off for it.

“That’s the main aim, there’s a lot of pressure on them next season, it’s huge, they just have to go out and give their all, they need a full squad of winners who believe they can stop them.”

If the Scottish Cup is finished this season then it will be yet another domestic treble for Neil Lennon’s men and not only the fans but even the Rangers FC management will now be looking at Steven Gerrard in order to see his response next campaign.

The former Liverpool man has had a fair bit of time to arrange the squad to his liking and now it’s all about delivering results at the club, which in turn would also mean stopping the progress of Celtic next season.
