Rangers FC have been on a spending spree for the past couple of months and if reports are to believe then the Gers have moved one step closer to signing their next big target.

The Ibrox outfit have been on the hunt for AS Roma striker Umar Sadiq for some time now as Steven Gerrard has been constantly trying to bring in striking options before the new campaign.

Sadiq has been one of the brightest prospects at Roma but the 21-year-old has failed to break into the first team and reports have suggested that the Serie A side are willing to send the player out on loan.

And soon after the news of Rangers’ interest in Umar Sadiq broke out, Steven Gerrard more or less confirmed his club’s interest in the striker by saying:

“We’re a fan of Umar Sadiq but there is nothing to report on that yet in terms of progress but we do like the player.

“We’ll have to see how that one materialises. He’d bring us a forward option – height, power, presence. He’s a player that works too hard believe it or not.

“He does tons and tons of running. He’s very enthusiastic. He’s the type of player who gives you just as much out of possession as he does in possession which is very important.

“We’ve got an interest but at the moment he’s still a Roma player. It’s ongoing. We have to be respectful and see how it progresses but he’s someone we like.”

And now some sources are claiming that Rangers have moved closer to signing up the 21-year-old and the deal could be wrapped up as early as Monday.

To add more fuel to this fire, AS Roma manager Eusebio Di Francesco has decided to leave Umar Sadiq out of his 31 man squad for the pre-season training camp which has led many people to believe that the transfer is imminent.

Steven Gerrard is willing to pay a six-figure sum for the services of Umar Sadiq and if the deal does go through then this will be the fourth loan spell for the 21-year-old.
