Rangers FC have managed to sign Liverpool youngster Ryan Kent on a permanent deal before the European transfer window closed down earlier this week.

Ryan Kent had a wonderful loan spell with the Teddy Bears during the 2018-19 season which is why Steven Gerrard was eager to bring him back to the club this campaign too.

But at one point in time, the transfer looked almost out of the reach of Rangers since a number of other Premier League clubs had shown interest in signing Ryan Kent up and most of them wanted a permanent arrangement.

Initially, Liverpool wanted around £10-12 million for the winger but there was no way that the Gers would have been able to pay that much since £12 million was the overall transfer budget for Rangers this summer.

Eventually, though, Steven Gerrard did get his man and the club ended up paying around £7 milion for his services which for many was a very good price to pay for the winger.

But according to Chris Sutton, the signing of Ryan Kent is a sign of panic from the Rangers manager.

Sutton wrote on BBC Radio 5 Live: “He’s (Rangers manager Steven Gerrard) rattled, they’re shaken, panic buy today, £7m! People will be asking ‘where are they finding this money from?’

“I think he’s signed over 25 players since he’s been there. Why didn’t they sign him before? How many wingers have Rangers got?

“They signed Ojo, they signed Hastie, they signed Jones, they have Arfield, Aribo who played there. They are rattled, they are shaken by it all.”

VERDICT:

Obviously, the manager has brought in more than two dozen players ever since he took charge of the club and it also true that most of these players have turned out to be failures.

But amongst all of them, Ryan Kent was perhaps the only player who was a shining star for Rangers during the 2018-19 season.

Last season Kent was named the SPFA Young Player of the Year which is one of the biggest reason why Gerrard was so eager to bring him back. Initially, the manager was more than happy to call back Ryan Kent on another loan deal but signing him permanently was obviously the main target for the Ibrox outfit.
