Should Rangers try & sign this centre-forward or should Gerrard back off?

Rangers FC are amongst a host of clubs who are looking to sign 30-year-old centre-forward Lyle Taylor as he’s set to be a free agent this summer.

A couple of weeks ago everything was fine with this deal but ever since the forward has refused to play in the remaining matches of the Championship season, there’s been a raging debate on whether the Gers should such him or not.

As per Taylor, he will not play the remaining games for Charlton Athletic due to fears of getting injured but some people look at it as utter unprofessionalism. Others though think this is just basic human instinct from a player who is in the final phase of his playing career.

Against Rangers FC signing Lyle Taylor:

Ibrox legend, Ally McCoist has urged Rangers FC to try and move away from signing Lyle Taylor this summer due to the fact that the player oozes unfaithfulness.

He said, as reported: “Of course, Lyle Taylor, or any individual has got a priority to look after himself and his family.

“But, when you sign a contract, any contract, any profession, any walk of life, if you’re happy to sign the contract you should at least be happy to enough to honour the contract and see it out.

“You can’t sign a contract and say ‘of there’s a nice three-year contract’ and honour it for two-and-a-half years.

“It just not right, it’s 100 per cent not right. So, if any individual and I don’t know the ins and outs of Lyle’s contract, any player who is under contract, I’ve got a serious problem with them not putting themselves up to play.”

For signing the 30-year-old:

Former England international Danny Mills though has tried to find logic in Taylor’s radical decision and hence he’s claimed that the 30-year-old has just tried to save his career by refusing to play.

Danny Mills told Football Insider: “I completely get it. It is not a popular opinion but he is 30-years-old. This is his final, big contract.

“He has not signed a pre-contract and he is not 21 – there are not going to be as many deals on the table for players this year. He cannot risk it.

“His contract runs out and it is incredibly awkward and exceptional circumstances but I get it. I cannot say that I would not do the same thing in his situation. People talk about loyalty to clubs but if he gets injured are Charlton going to give him another year? Another four-year deal if he gets injured? No they are not.

“Put yourself in his shoes – wouldn’t we all do that?”

Now this debate will rage on for a really long time but if Rangers FC were to lose out on Alfredo Morelos this summer then Gerrard will have no other option but to make a move for Lyle Taylor since Jermaine Defoe can never carry the goal-scoring burden for the entirety of the 20/21 season.
