Tottenham Hotspur have made their first signing of the summer in the form of 21-year-old Davinson Sanchez from Ajax Amsterdam.

Spurs have bought the player on a six year deal for a fee of around £42 million and with that, the Colombian International becomes the fourth player to make the move from Ajax to Spurs after the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen. The deal is almost wrapped up and is awaiting only a valid work permit and a successful medical.

Player Background:

The 21-year-old is a powerhouse performer and was voted the Players Player of the Year at Ajax during the previous season. Sanchez made his debut for the senior side of Ajax back in 2016 and since then he has played only 32 matches for the Eredivisie side. But in these 32 matches, he has managed to catch the attention of a lot of high profile teams across Europe. Along with Spurs, La Liga giants Barcelona had also shown an interest in signing the player but somehow it did not materialize.

Dutch football legend Ruud Gullit has also gone on to claim that Davinson Sanchez is the best defender Ajax have seen since Jaap Stam.

Where does he fit in at Spurs?

Davinson will most probably not find an immediate place in the first team line-up. The Colombian will serve as a back up to the likes of Alderweireld and Vertonghen – atleast in the Premier League fixtures. But with Spurs attacking on all fronts this season, expect Sanchez to heavily feature in all the cup games.

And given the crazy amounts of money that have been floating around the transfer market, paying £42 million for a 21-year-old player and that too for a six year deal seems nothing short of a bargain.
