Newcastle United are looking at Steven Gerrard to replace Rafa Benitez as their next manager – as per reports.

Rafa Benitez left the club last week after his contract at St James’ Park came to an end and the former Liverpool boss has headed to the Chinese Super League.

While the likes of Patrick Viera have also been linked with the Magpies job but it is being claimed that Mike Ashley wants Steven Gerrard to take charge of his club.

Earlier it was reported that Newcastle Utd had made contact with the current Gers boss but he had turned then away saying that he is not interested in leaving Ibrox this summer.

Now though, the Times have rebuffed these claiming saying, Mike Ashley, is yet to approach Steven Gerrard.

Earlier this week, the report stated: “Steven Gerrard has not been approached by Newcastle United to replace Rafa Benítez as their new manager.

“Newcastle are understood to be considering the Glasgow Rangers boss to take charge at St James’ Park, but there has been no contact as yet to the former Liverpool captain.

“Gerrard, 39, is currently preparing for Rangers’ Europa League, first qualifying round tie with Gibraltar side St Joseph’s, having turned down offers from sides in the Championship earlier in the summer.”

Most pundits have claimed that Steven Gerrard will not leave Rangers FC this season since he is yet to prove himself at the club.

The first focus for the Gers boss would be to grab a silverware next season and then maybe he will think of moving out.

But a small section of the Rangers fan feel that Steven Gerrard will find it really hard to say no to Newcastle United – when they come calling.

The former England international’s ultimate dream is to manage Liverpool in the future and taking charge of big Premier League club like Newcastle United will only enhance those chances.
