If we were to make a fair analysis then we would have to say that England have been one of the more overhyped teams in the World Cup over the past couple of tournaments.

Every four years, fans and pundits pitch there hope on the Three Lions but they fail to deliver every single time. And the frustration had gotten so huge that the fans stopped expecting too much from England.

But that could all change this year.

England – led by an ambitious Gareth Southgate are looking more promising than ever and many fans are starting to believe that their team can really go all the way this year.

And this faith on the Three Lions is resonating across all quarters.

According to the latest reports, a total of 24 million viewers in the UK watched England’s penalty shoot-out against Colombia which makes it of the most-watched events in recent TV history.

The previous broadcast to gain more viewership that the shootout was the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony.

The 24 million viewership also means that the shootout has been seen by more people the royal wedding that happened recently.

The whole match had an average viewership of around 16 million which spiked by 50% once people heard about the shootout between both the teams.

This 24 million viewership does not take into account the millions of people who streamed the game online and the official broadcaster ITV have reported that they had received 3.3m requests for the game on its ITV Hub streaming platform.

The superb numbers during the England vs Colombia game is a great boost for BBC who have the rights for England’s next game against Sweden on Sunday. If England make it to the semis then it will be broadcasted by ITV and the final will be shared by both BBC and ITV.
