Lucas Torreira has been a key figure for Arsenal ever since Unai Emery has decided to field him in midfield regularly.

Torreira warmed the benches during the first couple of weeks and everyone felt that the Uruguayan was not what Unai Emery had hoped he would be.

But the manager has since put his trust on the former Sampdoria man and his faith has also been duly rewarded by the midfielder.

Lucas Torreira has so far played 13 games for Arsenal and he has been the man who has made the London outfit tick in and around midfield.

So naturally, when Unai Emery chose to take him off in the second half many fans had raised concerns over the substitution.

But now the Gunners boss has revealed that it was Lucas Torreira who had actually asked to be substituted as he was feeling a bit tired.

Talking to Arsenal’s official website, Unai Emery said:

“He said to us that he was a little tired and that there was a possibility [he could get injured],

“He was giving us good balance but also we have to be clever because he played with the national team for two matches and sometimes you need to listen to the players when they sometimes need rest.

“Matteo is working very well and also I think we need every player. This change was because we needed to give him a rest.”

The win against the Cherries means Arsenal are now just one point away from the fourth spot on the Premier League table but with back-to-back games against Spurs and Man United coming up, the scenario could change very drastically for the London club.
