Liverpool spent around £75 million to bring in Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton during the January transfer window of 2018.

And initially, a lot of eyebrows were raised since Jurgen Klopp had chosen to spend so much money on signing a centre-back.

But during the 2018-19 season, Van Dijk has gone to establish himself as perhaps the best defender in the whole of Europe and not many forwards can boast to have gotten the better of the Dutchman.

With such a fine season under his belt, naturally there were bound to be some transfer whispers regarding the defender but it looks like Barcelona are actually serious about signing Virgil Van Dijk this summer.

The Mirror are reporting that Barcelona have made an enquiry about the availability of the 28-year-old who still has four years left on his current contract with Liverpool.

It was logical that Liverpool who shut any potential interest from the La Liga outfit but if reports are to be believed then the enquiry did not even reach the Anfield outfit.

Neil Fewings of the Wasserman Media Group currently manages Virgil Van Dijk and it is being reported that he immediately shut down any interest from Barcelona making it clear that the centre-back is not for sale.

Virgil Van Dijk had recently made it clear that he has no intentions of thinking about moving out of Liverpool as his current focus is to succeed under Jurgen Klopp.

‘I think the future looks pretty bright,’ he said last month.

‘We have a fantastic team with players that want to develop, that want to give everything for the team and for the club.

‘[There is] so much quality in the team; sometimes you don’t even realise how good of [a group of] players we have – and also on the bench that want to play and be part of the team. So we have a fantastic future coming up.’
