Liverpool brought in Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton during the January transfer window of 2018 and his hefty price tag caused a fair bit of stir int he footballing circuit.

But this season, the defender has proved that why Liverpool exactly paid so much money for him and right now Van Dijk is without a doubt the best central defender in the Premier League.

This season Van Dijk has played in all the league games for the Reds and they have managed to keep 17 clean sheets during this time.

So obviously many pundits have singled out the Dutch international as their chose for the Player of the Year and this is where many have started showing objections.

While a large number of people have shown support for Van Dijk but others feel that it is Raheem Sterling who should be getting the Player of the Year.

Sterling just like Van Dijk has been key to Man City’s success this season and the England international has so far scored 18 goals and provided 15 assists for the Citizens in all competitions.

But according to Danny Murphy, it is Van Dijk who is still the favourite for the POTY.

“It’s still Van Dijk for me,” Danny Murphy told Jim White on talkSPORT.

“But I think what Sterling showed on Saturday is that he’s sharp, he’s fit, he’s hungry and he’s still flying.

“If he carries on doing that until the end of the season, how many goals can he score?”

“Sterling plays in all the big games, he produces more big moments in big games too.

“If City win the league, is Sterling’s contribution bigger because they’ve won the league? I’m not sure.

“If Liverpool or City miss out by a point, it wouldn’t detract from Sterling or Van Dijk’s fantastic season.”

“Although I think Van Dijk’s the best defender in the world and he’s had a sensational season, it’s always easier to destroy than create.”
