Timo Werner Liverpool
Timo Werner (RB Leipzig, 11) kann sein Versagen nicht fassen, nachdem er völlig frei stehend über das Tor schoss; Enttäuschung, enttäuscht, Frustration, disappointed

Chelsea have agreed on a principle deal to sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig. But as per a report in the Metro, Frank Lampard actually wanted to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Arsenal.

Yes, according to this latest revelation, the Chelsea boss was prioritising the signing of the Gabon international but it was the club’s board who had to intervene and convince their manager to shift focus to Timo Werner.

The report cites The Athletic’s Ornstein and Chapman podcast, saying: “Chelsea’s board switched from targeting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to prioritising a move for RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner despite Frank Lampard pushing to sign the Arsenal striker, according to reports.

“Chelsea had also been targeting a move for Aubameyang in the January transfer window before changing their focus to Werner.

“According to The Athletic’s Ornstein & Chapman podcast, Frank Lampard and Petr Cech had been leading Chelsea’s interest and were pushing the club’s hierarchy to complete a deal.

“However, Chelsea’s board refused to go ahead with a move for Aubameyang as they had concerns over his lack of re-sale value, with the striker due to turn 31 this month.

“Instead, Chelsea’s board wanted to sign a younger striker and Werner is the player who fits their profile more than Aubameyang.”

Will Lampard be happy with Timo Werner?

The Chelsea boss might have missed out on Aubameyang who without a doubt has been Arsenal’s best player this season. But we are pretty confident he will have no complaints with the replacement he’s gotten.

Werner has been on fire for Leipzig this season having scored 25 goals in just 30 Bundesliga games so far. And it’s actually Liverpool who have missed out badly on this deal since Klopp’s team were always the favourites to sign the 24-year-old this summer.

Having said that, Arsenal might still lose out on their forward since some rumours claim that the Anfield outfit will shift their focus to the Gabon international in the coming months, now that they have missed out on Timo Werner.
