West Ham United and Aston Villa could be relegated from the Premier League by the end of the 2019-20 season and if that happens then it would be a big cause of concerns for both the sides.
The English top division is set to resume from June 17 and if the two sides are relegated then they will have to play in the Championship next season. And the resumption the second division is still under heavy scepticism.
The Championship still has no plans of a restart which could indirectly affect their upcoming campaign since the tier-two matches begin one week before the Premier League starts.
The 2020-21 season was scheduled to start on August 1 which at this point in time is not a viable option and that is why the authorities might be coming up with a rather drastic plan, as per Claret and Hugh.
The report claims: “There is talk of a radical plan that the Championship could be split into two regional divisions next season which a promotion place up for grabs for the two clubs that top them.
“A Southern league could see West Ham United play against Norwich, Aston Villa, Birmingham, Brentford, Bristol City, Charlton, Fulham, Luton, Millwall, QPR and Reading.
“With twelve teams in each regional league, West Ham would play just 22 fixtures in that scenario with just eleven home games at the London stadium.
“The second and third place in each regional league could play each other in play-offs to decide the third Premier League promotion place.”
This plan is still in the pipeline but if it does go through then both Villa and West Ham United are not only going to lose out on some major revenue opportunities but will also have to ride their luck a bit in order to get back into the Premier League.
Right now, Aston Villa are 19th on the league table with 25 points while West Ham United 16th but they are out of the bottom three thanks to their slightly superior goal difference.
