The 2018 Ballon d’Or nominees were announced a couple of days ago and since then one of the most argued questions is ‘Who will win the Ballon d’Or?’

The answer to the question ‘Who will win the Ballon d’Or?’ would have been quite simple a couple of years ago when one could easily say that it would be a two horse race – either Ronaldo or Messi.

But now things have changed.

Luka Modric broke the duopoly earlier this season when he beat both the superstars to pick up the FIFA best player award and many pundits feel that the Croatian could also pick up the Ballon d’Or.

Kylian Mbappe is also another player who is favourite to win the trophy after he had a World Cup winning campaign with France a couple of months ago.

But then all these favourites have been selected by pundits and journalists who are widely known to make logical decisions.

Fans though are not particularly known for their rationality.

And a perfect example of that was seen when France Football put out a poll asking the fans to vote ‘Who will win the Ballon d’Or?’

And immediately the footballing world was sent into a frenzy when more than 50 per cent of the votes were cast in favour of Liverpool forward Mo Salah.

With that many believed that they might see a repeat of the Puskas award where Mo Salah won even after scoring an average goal.

But thankfully that initial hype died down but then other odd name cropped out from the poll of ‘Who will win the Ballon d’Or?’

Now Lionel Messi is leading the poll with about 47 per cent of the votes which is also rather shocking since the Argentine had a poor season for both club and country.

While Barcelona did manage to win the La Liga but they were poor in the Champions League and Argentina too crashed out early during the World Cup.

While we feel that Luka Modric will and should win the Ballon d’Or but right now we are not ready to put our money where out mouths are.
