Celtic FC have offered a new deal to goalkeeper Craig Gordon but according to Noel Whelan, the 37-year-old could snub a chance to stay at Parkhead next season.

Gordon is now a free agent after his deal expired last month but Neil Lennon wants him to remain at the club, in order to provide backup to his first-choice keeper. But as per Whelan, the shot-stopper might look to join St Mirren, a club which is keen to bring him on board during the summer.

The former Aberdeen striker said told Football Insider: “Well of course. Any player coming to the end of their career, even myself, even when I retired I wanted to come back.

“I tried a couple of times but injury stopped me. Your head says yes but your body very quickly tells you no. You’ve got to come terms with that and sometimes that is difficult to come to terms with, that you’ll never play again.

“Maybe he wants to string it out as long as he can. If something’s on the table and you feel like you’ve still got something to offer, then why not? But you’ve got to understand that football takes a lot out of your body.

“He’s played for a number of years, thrown himself to the ground, taken knocks, you’ve got to be honest with yourself, can you still do it?

“Maybe he’s weighing up options and that is a good option. It’s not far from Glasgow, St Mirren, so it’s a possibility there that club and player can maybe squeeze that last bit of juice out of him.”

Will Celtic miss Craig Gordon?

Craig Gordon has been with Celtic since 2014 but this season all he has done is warm the benches, featuring in just six matches across all competition for the Hoops.

So, it is natural instinct for any player to join a club where he feels wanted – both on and off the pitch.

But even if the 37-year-old was to vacate his lockerroom at Celtic Park this summer, we don’t think Neil Lennon will be too worried since the club are sure to bring in a new keeper before the 2020/21 season kicks off.

If Craig Gordon remains at the club then Celtic will have a bit of depth in their first-team squad but if he chooses a move to St Mirren then players like Forster and Bain can do a flawless job, even in his absence.
