Rangers FC so far have made four new signings during the January transfer window.
Two of them have signed pre-contracts with the club and will arrive during the summer while the other two – Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis have already joined the squad.
Jermain Defoe has arrived from AFC Bournemouth on an 18-month loan deal while Steven Davis has joined on a six-month loan contract.
Even though Davis’ deal was supposed to be permanent one since he is out of contract at his parent club during the summer but the midfielder has made it clear that he would love to end his professional career at Ibrox.
But one major problem regarding both these players is the fact that they are well past their prime.
While Davis is 34 years old, Jermain Defoe became 36 a couple of months ago.
And many fans believe that the Gers are wasting previous money by bringing in older players into the squad – for short term success.
But now Mark Allen has given a statement which clearly reflects why both Defoe and Davis have a very probability to succeed at the club.
Talking to the Herald Scotland, Allen said: “I think that is vitally important and I have said on a number of occasions that you look at various characteristics when you are trying to sign players,
“One of the big ones is whether they can handle Ibrox.
“It is a cauldron, an unbelievable set of supporters, the like of which I have never seen before personally. So you need to make sure they are tried and tested and they understand the league.
“In these two players, we know that because we have watched them over a period of time and we know they can play in the Premiership, and probably higher.
“Planning is everything and if you can get ahead of the game, even better,
“That is always the intention, to have a plan in mind for where we are going and what we need to get there.
“Jermain and Steven are no exceptions to that, they were very much on the radar and we had an opportune moment to go for it so we did. Fortunately for us, it all came together.”
Mark Allen has claimed that the pressure of playing at a club like Rangers can sometimes get to the players.
And we cannot agree more given that so many of the summer signings have failed to live up to the expectations despite being so wonderfully gifted.
