Chelsea have surprisingly managed to do really well under their new manager Frank Lampard as they sit on the fourth spot of the Premier League table after beating Manchester City at home on Thursday.
Despite the fact that Lampard has not been able to sign any new players during the past two transfer windows, the manager has done a great job in keeping the Blues in the top-four up until now.
And after entering the semi-final of the FA Cup by beating Leicester City this Sunday, Chelsea now have given themselves a pretty good chance of winning a silverware this season.
But according to pundit Chris Sutton, Frank Lampard is expected to face a totally different type of challenge once the 2019-20 season comes to an end.
“I think he has done a good job and answered some of the people who questioned whether he deserved to get the job,” the BT Sport analyst told TEAMtalk.
“Arguably, Frank went into the first big job of his managerial career at the perfect moment.
“They had a transfer embargo to deal with, expectations were massively diluted and Lampard had time to get used to the job and the fact that Chelsea are sitting in the top four of the Premier League is a testament to the job he has done.
“Now, after the money that has been spent and the quality of the players that have been signed, there will be a very different pressure for Frank to deal with next season.
“That is the nature of the business we are in. There will be pressure when you are at a big club and the big question for Frank will be can they close the gap between Liverpool and Manchester City, who are quite a distance ahead of them at the moment.
“Those two teams are the benchmark at the moment.”
The signings of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner has certainly raised the expectations for the Chelsea fans with many strongly believing that their side can now compete for the Premier League title.
And agreeing to what Chris Sutton said, we also feel that Lampard will be venturing into unknown territory once the current season wraps up.
But right now, the Chelsea manager’s focus will be on retaining their Champions League status next season and in the hunt of achieving that, the Blues will take on West Ham United at the London Stadium on Wednesday.
