Celtic FC tried to hold onto Craig Gordon by offering him a new deal but the keeper has chosen to join Hearts for the upcoming season.

Gordon was the second choice keeper at Celtic last season behind Fraser Forster, failing to appear in even a single Premiership game. And this was perhaps the biggest reason why the 37-year-old chose to reject the new contract.

And according to Alan Hutton, Neil Lennon might regret the decision to not offer Craig Gordon the perfect deal at the perfect time.

Hutton told Football Insider: “It could be. As we look at it at the moment, they’re struggling for a goalkeeper. They keep talking about Forster, Joe Hart’s popped up, even David Marshall I saw this morning.

“They’ve obviously got options there but at the end of the day, they haven’t actually got anyone in at the moment so Celtic could regret it, I think.

“He’s been a great servant to them and for the offer, by all accounts, that he was handed wasn’t great and from what I can see it was a massive pay cut so I can see why he’s unhappy.

6 League Titles. 5 League Cups. 3 Scottish Cups. The last six years have been the most successful period of my professional career, and I would like to thank everyone who has played their part in making this possible. The club, for initially taking a chance on someone who hadn’t played in nearly three years. And to Woodsy for encouraging me to make the move in the first place, and for training me ridiculously hard ever since. I’ve had the pleasure of playing alongside some brilliant team-mates – who without, my time at the club would have been very different. The fans, for their support. Home, away… all over the world. Thank you. My family, who have been there through it all. The ups and downs, the miles, the sacrifices, the celebrations. I hope I’ve made them proud. At 37, and with a few years in me yet, I just want to play the game I love, and have played for 20+ professional seasons. Football can make for difficult decisions, but I’m looking forward to the next chapter and challenge. Thank you, again. CG.

“He’s just bitten the bullet and decided to leave, I understand why he’s done it.”

Letting Craig Gordon leave was seemingly the right decision some weeks ago since Fraser Forster was supposed to return for the 2020-21 season.

But now, getting the services of the Southampton man is looking pretty difficult due to a number of reasons.

And if the Bhoys fail to bring in a new goalkeeper before the new season begins then Craig Gordon will be badly missed since the 37-year-old still has a lot to give at the top level.
