According to a report in Sport Bild[h/t Sport Witness] Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with the representatives of Dani Olmo over a possible summer move.

Spurs brought in James Maddison from Leicester City last summer and in his first season, the attacking midfielder has failed to make any major impression. Ange is eager to bring in a new AM next season and it seems like Dani Olmo is one of his preferred targets.

The Spaniard has a £56m release clause in his current contract that becomes active in July and Spurs are willing to pay that fee to bring him on board. However, Barcelona hold a substantial interest in the 26-year-old and they are eager to bring back their academy graduate to the club in the summer.

Will Dani Olmo choose Spurs or is he going to wait for Barcelona?

Olmo spent seven years with the Barcelona youth system before moving out and the midfielder will definitely want to head back to his boyhood club. Also, Barcelona do not have a recognised attacking midfielder in their squad right now which means Dani Olmo will get uninterrupted game time.

Xavi has mostly been using a 4-3-3 formation this season with Gundogan, De Jong as his two advanced midfielders and Christensen, who is a natural centre-back, playing in the CDM role.

A player like Dani Olmo will help elevate Barcelona’s attack next season but we doubt if they will be able to find the £56 million to trigger his release clause. Barcelona have selected a long list of summer targets most of these plans are expected to fail due to a shortage of funds.

Dani Olmo will prefer Barcelona over Spurs on most days and if Tottenham miss out on Champions League football then they will have a very slim chance of landing the 26-year-old. Also, if they are serious about signing him then they will have to guarantee him regular starts next season which will only be possible if Olmo agrees to play in a more central role, as a right-sided midfielder. He’s played in this position at Leipzig this season but his preference is always the No 10 role.
