Bayer Leverkusen’s attacking midfielder Kai Havertz is expected to be the next big thing in European football, according to Owen Hargreaves.

The attacking midfielder has caught the attention of a number of big European clubs like Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool while current defending PL champions Man City have also been linked with him over the past few weeks.

Kai Havertz is a product of Leverkusen’s famed academy and this season, the 20-year-old has scored eight and assisted five goals in just 23 Bundesliga matches so far.

And former Manchester United man, Hargreaves has gone on to compared Havertz to German legends like Ballack and Mesut Ozil.

“He is special,” Hargreaves told Goal, as reported by Daily Star. “He is the next one.

“I think all the best German players stay in the Bundesliga for a while and then they go to the Premier League or Barcelona or Real Madrid.

“Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Toni Kroos and Mesut Ozil all travelled and did well. These Bundesliga talents are in high demand as they are well schooled and good professionals. He is the next one.

“All eyes are on Haaland and Sancho but Kai Havertz is the one from a German perspective. He is special and he is like a hybrid of Michael Ballack and Mesut Ozil. That says a lot in terms of his goals and elegance.

“He is a super player and I think many fans will be watching him from England’s top six and thinking that a guy like him is good enough to go to their teams.”

Will Kai Havertz play in the Premier League next season?

It’s clear that almost all of the big English clubs are keeping a close eye on the youngster and some of them have already made plans to launch a big in the summer.

But if the buzz in the German media is accurate then the 20-year-old is likely to snub a move to the Premier League and remain in Germany beyond the summer.

Amongst the interested clubs, Bayern Munich’s name is shining the brightest and as per the bookmakers, the Bavarians are likely to secure a transfer before the other big clubs in Europe can even make a formal move.

Having said that though, the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool are not going to give up the chase but Manchester United should pull out of the transfer if they manage to get their hands on Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.
