Manchester City are ready to offload Kalvin Phillips during the upcoming winter transfer window and as things stand, Liverpool are one of the favourites to land the midfielder.

Newcastle United and Juventus have been keeping tabs on Phillips’ situation at the Etihad Stadium and going by Guardiola’s recent words, the England international has no future at the club.

Guardiola told the press earlier this month: “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I feel so sorry for my decision for him. I’ve said that many times.

“He doesn’t deserve what has happened to him and I’m so sorry.

“The only thing I can say about him is I am asking for good personalities and characters and he is a perfect example. And after that, I have to give him something and I didn’t do that.

“I’m not very pleased [with myself] and I am so sorry for him. I will not say that [to him] because it is a business and I have to be a professional.”

Despite playing in just 31 matches for Man City since 2022, Kalvin Phillips has remained very professional but with the Euro coming up, he will have to secure an exit in January just to make sure he plays constantly for the second half of the season.

Both Newcastle and Juventus will be able to guarantee consistent game time to the 28-year-old and even though Liverpool have several midfielders in their ranks, they too can make a place for Kalvin Phillips in their starting XI.

World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister has failed to play in the CDM role which has been a big setback for Jurgen Klopp and that’s why the Liverpool manager is desperate to bring in a new defensive midfielder during the January window.

Neither Mac Allister nor Gravenberch can play in the No 6 role while Thiago is constantly out injured and the Spaniard’s time at the club is very much over.

Phillips was one of the best CDMs while he was at Leeds United but his move to Man City has been a major dent to his career. He’s even lost his place in the England national team and the only way to salvage that is by playing as many matches as he can until May.

Newcastle United and Juve will not lose hope in this transfer race but realistically speaking, Liverpool will be a much better option for Kalvin Phillips. Not only will he be able to work under a big manager but at the same time, he will be able to challenge for the Premier League title.
