Jermain Defoe has been with Rangers for one and a half seasons now but the player wishes to spend a few more years at Ibrox, the 37-year-old has revealed in an interview.

Defoe is currently on loan from Premier League side Bournemouth but the Gers have already announced that he will sign as a free transfer this summer.

But now speaking about the prospect of playing till 40, the striker has revealed if he can put in a fine shift during the 2020-21 season, he might as well want a new deal at Ibrox.

Defoe said, as quoted Daily Record: “Oh my god, I don’t know. For me, the age thing is something I don’t think about. I’m just out there training with the boys and I understand my role, it’s not just about football for me.

“I’ve enjoyed being in the changing rooms and not being the school teacher but looking after the younger ones and saying ‘Oh you should do this, you should do that’. I always say to the boys: ‘If you need anything then come and speak to me’. And they do at Rangers, I just enjoy every training session.

“Trevor Sinclair said to me one: ‘JD enjoy every second because it goes quick’. I was 17 or 18 at the time and I thought what are you talking about, I’ve got years and I feel like now I just want to take it all in, enjoy every training session, every game. I’ve got another year at Rangers, I’ve got next season and then we’ll see what happens.

“If next season I score 15 or 20 goals then I want another season and we’ll see what happens.”

Will Rangers hand Jermain Defoe another new deal?

Last season, Jermain Defoe scored six goals and provided five assists in just 12 Premiership matches for the Gers and this season he’s already found the net 13 times in 20 top division matches.

So clearly, the former Spurs man still has the talent to play against the best but what remains to be seen is whether he can carry this on for yet another season.

While he’s got significant game time in the league but all throughout the season, Defoe has featured in only one Europa League game which is a clear indication that Gerrard is using him as a backup for all those not-so-important domestic matches.

But all said and done, Rangers have truly benefitted from the experience of the former England international which is why it shouldn’t come as a shock of Gerrard goes ahead and keeps him beyond the 2020-21 season.
