Man United have shown an interest in signing Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo but as per the latest reports, it’s Liverpool who are now the favourites to sign him.

Takefusa Kubo moved through clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Villarreal and Mallorca to finally join Real Sociedad in 2022 and since then, the 22-year-old has played in 69 games across all competitions. This season, Kubo has scored six goals along with three assists in 18 La Liga matches and right now, he’s playing for Japan in the Asian Cup.

Man United have been targeting the 22-year-old for some time as Erik ten Hag is on the lookout for a new right-winger but Liverpool seems to have jumped the queue.

Right before the start of the January transfer window, Liverpool had contacted Sociedad over a possible move but the winger had made it clear that he wishes to remain in Spain at the moment. However, Liverpool still remain in contact with the La Liga club primarily because he has a release clause of £51 million.

The winger had scored nine goals in 44 games last season and this season, not only has he netted six goals but his performances have also gotten way better.

Jurgen Klopp will leave in the summer and with him, several first-team players could leave as well. Mo Salah is one name who has been tipped to leave in the summer and if the Egyptian heads for the exits then someone like Takefusa Kubo can be the ideal replacement.

However, the Japanese international has already rejected Liverpool once and the only way he will agree to join them is if he is guaranteed game time next season.

This is where Man United won’t lose hope because Antony will most likely be offloaded in the summer and once the Brazilian leaves, a player like Kobu can easily come in and slot into that position. A transfer fee of £51 million won’t be a problem for Man United but the primary thing they will have to do is secure top-level European football for the next campaign.

If the Japanese international continues his fine form for the remainder of the season, he will demand UCL football and if Man United finish outside of the top four then they don’t stand a chance.
