Chelsea have agreed on a principle deal to sign striker Timo Werner from RB Leipzig and this has come as a huge blow for arch-rivals Liverpool.

For the longest time, the Anfield outfit were the favourites to sign him but the Blues managed to perform the ultimate coup and land the German international for a bargain fee.

While the Liverpool fans and many experts feel Jurgen Klopp has lost out on a marquee signing but according to Robbie Fowler, Timo Werner is not in the same talent bracket as Sane, Salah and Roberto Firmino.

Robbie Fowler said in his column: “I’ve heard the noise surrounding, Timo Werner, in recent weeks – but I’m not a big fan.

“I realise he’s a talented player, he has moments of real brilliance in matches that underline his quality. But I stand by this: is Werner up to the standard of Liverpool’s current front three? Not for me.

“I’ve seen the meltdown from some Liverpool fans when they realised he’s probably not leaving RB Leipzig for Anfield after all.

“It makes it seem as though he’s a Marco van Basten, a world-class player who would walk into any side. For the life of me, I don’t know why. I’ve watched him a fair few times and there are things about his game I like and admire.

“But does he influence games consistently enough? Not for me. Does he match up to the players you are signing him to challenge and replace? Not at Liverpool. Maybe at Chelsea.”

Will Timo Werner be a crapshoot signing?

During the ongoing season, Timo Werner has played in 30 Bundesliga matches so far having managed to score 25 goals and provide eight assists. So clearly any major European team would be lucky to have a player like him at their disposal.

Fowler can criticize and compare him all he wants but even Jurgen Klopp knows how big a miss this is going to be. Especially when his own centre-forward Roberto Firmino has seen a dip in form over the past couple of months.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have gotten a gem of a centre-forward who has the capabilities to become the best in English soil without much effort. But now what remains to be seen is if the German can adjust to live in the Premier League or does he turn out to be another Alvaro Morata.
