Timo Werner to Chelsea EPL

Timo Werner played his first Premier League match for Chelsea on Monday against Brighton and Hove Albion, but the German failed to get his name on the scoresheet.

He did manage to win a penalty in the first-half of the game but since then he looked a lot subdued and it was quite indicative that Werner was playing with some kind of a knock.

‘I was really pleased with Timo,’ Frank Lamaprd said after the match. ‘I know the qualities he is going to bring, we saw that with the speed to get the penalty.

‘He is going to be a real threat. He is a very mobile centre-forward who can do so many things for us. He is one who has had some games, he has a bit of fitness, and you could see that.

‘He took a knock when he won the penalty which we hope is a dead leg. I would like to think if it is that we have a bit of time to get him back [for the Liverpool game].

This was an immediate cause of concern since Chelsea would be taking on Liverpool next weekend and the absence of someone like Timo Werner would be a big blow for Frank Lampard and his plans.

But thankfully, the forward has made it clear that he will be fit and available for selection next weekend when Liverpool visit Stamford Bridge.

Werner said to Sky Sports, via Football London: “Yeah, it was from the penalty. The knee of the goalkeeper hit me directly in the muscle and it went very hard.

“For the rest of the game, it hurt a lot and I couldn’t do some movements because the muscle went very hard, but at the end, I’m happy that we won.

“I don’t care about this. We played a good game today, we did well. I’m happy that I got the penalty because I think it’s very important for our game.

“We can do much better than we did today, but we won the game. A lot of players in our team haven’t played any games this season. So, we’re maybe not in the strength that we can be.

“In the next few weeks, we will get very fit and confident when we win more games like this today.

“Of course. In games like this[vs Liverpool], you’re always fit.”
