Unai Emery’s appointment as the new Arsenal manager meant that a lot of the current players’ careers were at risk as the Spaniard has plans for a major overhaul.
And the first big name to make an exit was Jack Wilshere who had announced last week that he will move out of the Emirates once his current contract comes to an end.
But now it seems that Emery has shown faith on a very unlikely player – to be quite honest.
According to reports, Arsenal are set to provide defender Calum Chambers with a new four-year deal which will keep him at the club until 2022.
This is especially shocking for two reasons – firstly Chambers had just signed a two-year contract extension last October and it is very uncanny for the club to provide a new deal to any player who has just signed a contract extension.
And the second and the most important reason is that the report claims that Arsenal manager Unai Emery wants Calum Chambers to play as a centre-back in his first eleven which is bizarre given the fact that the 23-year-old has failed to consolidate himself as a centre-back under Arsene Wenger’s regime.
Calum Chambers is capable of being as a centre-back as well as a full-back but Emery’s decision of using him as a centre-back is quite odd.
More so when Arsenal are on the verge of signing Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund.
Calum Chambers moved to Arsenal from Southampton in 2014 but the 23-year-old has been able to carve out a niche for himself in the first team. During the 2017-18 season, he managed to start only 10 games in the Premier League for the Gunners failing to score even once.
