France grappled their way to a 2-1 victory over Australia during their first game of the World Cup and if it hadn’t been for Aziz Behich’s 80th-minute own-goal then Didier Deschamps’s side would have had to be content with just one point.

After the match, football pundits all over the world ripped into the French team highlighting the average performance of many so-called superstars but no one could muster up a criticism against midfielder N’Golo Kante.

Kante was perhaps the only shining light for France during that game and now former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has come out and showered praises on the Chelsea midfielder.

Wenger has gone on record to state that Kante is one of the best in his position that the manager has ever seen.

Talking to beIN Sports, Wenger said: ‘He is one of the most influential midfielders I’ve seen play football.

‘He constantly makes simple decisions and never overcomplicates it.’

And this admiration for N’Golo Kante is nothing new from Arsene Wenger as the former Gunners boss has tried to sign the midfielder a couple of times in the past.

‘Have I looked to sign Kanté? Yes. When he was in France and when he was at Leicester,’ Wenger added.

‘I cannot explain everything [about why he preferred Chelsea] but it is quite obvious when you look at where he has gone.

‘Was it the money? I do not want to talk about that. Transfers are transfers – you cannot explain absolutely everything.’
