Rangers FC signed Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic during the summer transfer window and many have tipped to the pair to become the first choice centre-backs under new boss Steven Gerrard.

Despite being one of the high profile signings of the summer former Rangers defender Bob Malcolm has warned the new signings not to take things too lightly.

Speaking to the Evening Times, Malcolm said: “It is going to be the same for Connor and Nikola as it was for Bruno.

“They are playing in a position where there is no mercy if you make a mistake.

“But they are young and hungry and the fact that a few clubs were keen to sign Connor is a good sign for me.

“Hopefully, they can work hard and form a good partnership at the back and do well.”

While urging Goldson and Katic to pull up their socks, Bob Malcolm mentioned Bruno Alves who is the perfect example of a marque signing gone wrong.

Alves arrived last summer but the 36-year-old’s stay at Ibrox has been highly unsuccessful and now he is on the verge of moving to Parma.

Another big reason why Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic should be at the top of their game is the fact that Steven Gerrard in a recent interview has made it clear that he will not shy away from giving the academy players a chance – especially if they can prove themselves.
