Champions League Vertonghen Tottenham Spurs news

Despite all odds, Tottenham Hotspur beat Ajax in the Champions League semi-final in sensational fashion and now they will take on Liverpool in the final at Madrid.

Pochettino’s club failed to sign a single player during the past two transfer windows and they fittingly received a lot of criticism for it.

But still, the Argentine worked his magic and now the North London club have the chance of winning their first ever Champions League trophy.

And speaking before the high-profile clash, pundit Gary Lineker has claimed that Liverpool are surely the favourites to win the tournament but the heart that Spurs have shown this campaign is unmatched.

“Overall, team against team, (Liverpool) have got the better players,” Lineker said.

“They finished 20-odd points ahead of Tottenham this season so it’s hard to make a case where Tottenham are favourites.

“But, as we know in football, the best teams don’t always win, which is one of the things that makes it so special.

“Klopp is a massively enthusiastic, passionate man. This Liverpool side very much reflects his personality — very dynamic, great energy. He’s clearly very intelligent, and he’s a brilliant football man who shows his passion.

“(Pochettino) is… clearly one of the best managers in world football, but (Spurs) do need investment, he’s said that to me himself. He needs to be backed and I suspect if he’s not backed they’ll find it quite difficult to keep hold of him.”

“It really is a seminal moment for Tottenham. They’ve got to decide what they are.

“Whether they’re going to move forward and be a club that can compete in other Champions League finals rather than just a one-off… remains to be seen.”

Liverpool will be playing in their second consecutive Champions League final but unlike their previous one, no one really expects Jurgen Klopp’s side to be outclassed this time around.
