Defender David Luiz came up with yet another poor performance for Arsenal this week as Man City beat the Gunners 3-0 in the Premier League.

The defender came on as a sub after Pablo Mari picked up an injury and the Brazilian was at fault for City’s first two goals – also picking up a straight red card in the buildup to the second goal.

Luiz has been prompt to come out and take the full responsibility claiming that his current contract situation is partly to blame for his lapse in concentration.

After the loss, the centre-back said, as reported: “It was not the team’s fault, it was my fault. The coach is amazing, all the players did amazing, it was just my fault.

“I should have taken a different decision in the last two months. It was all about my contract. I don’t want to use that as an alibi or excuse, it’s just my fault and that’s it.

“I love to be here that is why I continue to train hard and that is why I came today. Nobody asked me to speak, it is up to me to show my face. I want to stay. The coach knows and wants me to stay, we are waiting for the decisions,”

David Luiz heading out of Arsenal?

Yes, the Arsenal fans have been furious with the defender after this poor performance but at the same time, they are also pleased that his horrible outing has come at the perfect time.

After the match, Luiz’s agent has revealed that Arsenal are due to take their final call on the defender’s future sometime this week.

“The contract situation has dragged on not because of any reason, not because of the will of either Arsenal or David to finalise, but really because of the situation that occurred with this pandemic,” he told talkSPORT.

“Now it becomes a moment where you’ve got 14 days left [until the deadline] and you’re at a critical point of your career, where you’d probably three or four years left at the very top level, so that’s obviously at the back of your mind.

“But that’s not an excuse for yesterday’s performance, but you are playing one of the best teams in England and Arsenal’s lack of control on the game would have put pressure on the defence. David wanted to have a different type of game.

“What I can tell you is the situation from Arsenal’s point of view will be resolved this week. The 22nd June is the deadline for most of the clubs to finish the season and beyond, irrespective of any situation or not.

“It’s a case of allowing Arsenal to sort out everything that needs to be sorted out during this pandemic. There are several issues within the whole structure that will get resolved.”

This loss against Manchester City has been a blessing in disguise for the Gunners management as they can now finally decide against giving David Luiz a one-year extension on his current deal at the Emirates.

Pablo Mari seems more than capable of playing in central defence and he will be joined by William Saliba next season. And the soon-to-arrive Frenchman should be more than an apt replacement for David Luiz.
