Peru will be playing their first World Cup finals since 1982 and believe it or not but the South American side have a greater chance of winning the tournament as compared to England football team.
But how?
Well for starters, Peru are currently ranked 11th on the FIFA Rankings while the England football team hold 13th position and according to sports data company Gracenote, Peru are currently better placed(5% chance) than the Three Lions(4% chance) to lift the World Cup trophy.
How are the percentages calculated?
Gracenote is a sports data company owned by Nielsen and they used a series of variables to predict the outcome of the World Cup.
The ratings within the ranking of football teams can be used to estimate the percentage chance of each match at the 2018 World Cup being a win, draw or loss for each of the teams.
These percentages are then fed into a simulation of the World Cup which we run one million times to produce estimates of the chance that each team reaches a particular stage of the competition.
But these percentages are just the start and according to Gracenote the simulations will be run all throughout the World Cup and the possibilities will be updated accordingly.
Who has the best chance of winning the World Cup?
According to Gracenote, Brazil have a 21 percent chance of winning the World Cup followed by Spain who have a 10 percent possibility.
Germany and Argentine hold the third and fourth spots respectively and both have an 8 percent chance.
The report also suggests that there is a 50-50 chance that the World Cup 2018 will see a new winner.
The England football team have been drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Tunisia and Panama. Gracenote predicts that the England football team have a 71 percent chance of making it to the knockout stages which is the same as Belgium.
