Rangers FC lost the golden opportunity to get above Celtic on the Premiership table as they lost their midweek game vs Aberdeen 1-0.
The Gers were misfiring in every area of the pitch and went behind in the seventh minute to a Scott McKenna strike.
And from that point onwards it was an uphill task for Steven Gerrard’s men.
In the second half, Rangers did shift gears but then Alfredo Morelos managed to get himself sent off for a clumsy tackle and Steven Gerrard’s men ended up losing the game.
Now summer signing Gareth McAuley has revealed that the Teddy Bears got more attracted to Aberdeen’s style of play instead of focusing on their own game.
“It is a disappointment, it’s frustration and it’s trying to find answers among ourselves. It is one where we want to get back to work – we let ourselves down tonight and we let our standards slip all over the park really from where we have been, and we only have ourselves to blame,” Gareth McAuley told Rangers TV
“We want to get back on the training pitch, get our work done and get our teeth into the game at the weekend.
“The manager has come in and said what he’s needed to say. I think we all knew we had let our standards slip, and that is personally as individuals where we need to look at ourselves and sort that out.
“It is important we move forward and important we go and put on a performance on Sunday, and build again.
“We started slowly and we got sucked into how they wanted to play as opposed to how we wanted to play, and then we started getting frustrated, giving free-kicks away, and that played into their hands.
“They were firing balls into the box and they were putting that many in, sods law is one was going to drop to them, and he [Scott McKenna] has finished it well to be fair.
“But we are frustrated about that as we feel we should have defended better, and that is a disappointing thing for me personally, the other defenders and us as a team.
“[The character] has to [show ahead of Sunday]. That is what this football club is about – it has been talked about and it was we have to do if we want to go and challenge and be at the top of the league and do something – win something – you have to move on quickly, be as positive as you can and make sure you take everything on-board, learn your lessons and hopefully it doesn’t happen again.”
