Rangers FC have signed the likes of Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson during the summer transfer window and the duo are going to be the centre-back pairing of choice for Steven Gerrard during the 2018-19 season.

At first glance, it might seem that the Light Blues have a very well oiled defensive line-up but in reality, the team still lacks that experience in defensive which will come very handy during tough situations.

And keeping in line with this, the latest rumours suggest that Rangers are looking at former West Bromwich Albion centre-back Gareth McAuley.

McAuley, 38 spent seven seasons with the Baggies playing 227 games for the club but is now a free agent after he was released at the end of the previous season.

Not being associated with a club means that Rangers will not have to pay a penny for the services of Gareth McAuley and his wages are also expected to be in the region of affordability for the Gers.

Getting in an experienced defender for free seems to be a pretty good deal to resist and Steven Gerrard should not waste time and make a move for McAuley as soon as possible.

Having said that though, this is not the first time that the Gers have been linked with Gareth McAuley as a couple of weeks ago, there were reports linking the 38-year-old to Gerrard’s side.

But pretty soon the links went cold only to resurface again this week.

There’s no doubt that Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic will be the first choice centre-backs for the Light Blues manager but if the Gers do manage to get into the Europa League then the experience of a player like Gareth McAuley will come in pretty handy.
