Rangers FC defender Gareth McAuley signed for the club after the end of the summer transfer window and now he has revealed his only regret.

McAuley left West Brom at the end of the previous season – becoming a free agent and ultimately signing a one year deal with his boyhood club.

But the centre-back is yet to reach full fitness and has only managed to make two appearances for the Gers – both of which have been substitute appearances.

And now Gareth McAuley has revealed that he regrets not joining a club during the pre-season.

McAuley told the Rangers’ official website“I have enjoyed it, and it has been hard work.

In hindsight, I should have gone in somewhere and done pre-season properly, but here I have done the hard work and I feel fit and ready to go and hopefully go away on international duty now and hopefully get some more minutes, and then come back, compete and hopefully get more minutes and push for starts.”

McAuley made his first Premiership appearance this weekend against Motherwell.

“I thoroughly enjoyed it – the whole occasion. The display before the game and how the game was going before getting on the pitch – it was very, very pleasing to get out there and to experience it,” the veteran defender added.

“Hopefully I can kick on, compete and hopefully get more appearances.

“The focus was really on the three points, doing well and the performance. Obviously, they went to 10-men, and it was about us being ruthless and relentless, and keeping the foot on the gas and keeping going, keeping the pressure on and getting more goals.

“Eros [Grezda] getting two goals today was super, Glenn[Middleton] getting another goal today was great too – it is a good day and a good confidence-builder. The ruthlessness of it was pleasing.”

Gareth McAuley has joined the Northern Ireland squad during the international break and they will take on Ireland and Austria.
