Rangers FC signed Gareth McAuley a couple of days ago and in doing so the 38-year-old defender became the 15th signing for the Light Blues during the summer.

Before McAuley, Gerrard had already signed three centre-backs for the club which more or less sorted out his defensive issues for the new season. But with the arrivals of the former West Brom man, the manager has injected that much needed experience into his first team squad.

The likes of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic are all fantastic defenders but the truth is that they lack experience which will come in very handy since the Light Blues have qualified for the Europa League.

And this is where Gareth McAuley comes into the picture.

While the fans will be particularly happy with the arrival of the centre-back but the real cherry on the icing was when it was revealed that McAuley had been a Rangers fanboy.

But this is something that we heard all pretty much heard in the past when players join a new club and they immediately claim to have followed them for a long time in the past.

McAuley was no different when he said“It is massive for me personally. My family support the club as do I. The street I was born on, the kerbs were painted red, white and blue, so to get the opportunity to come and play at this famous club is amazing.”

Now though the centre-back has gone one step further by sharing a picture on Twitter which proves his allegiance to the Light Blues certainly goes back a very long way.

Here’s the picture:

Gareth Mcauley will surely not feature in the first team setup every week but the fact that he has played over 200 games in the Premier League will be crucial for the mentality of all the young players.

Steven Gerrard who is also 38 years old knows what it’s like to play at the top level but all he can do is manage from the dugout. So in a sense, Gareth McAuley will be that crucial link on the pitch between the players and the manager.
