England will take on Sweden in the quarterfinal of the 2018 World Cup after beating Colombia on penalties in the Round of 16.
England almost had a regulation 90-minute win but it was Yerry Mina who spoiled the party by scoring an injury time equaliser which took the game to extra time and then onto penalties.
During the shootout, the English boys held their nerves and came out on top to win their first ever penalty shootout of the World Cup.
While we have been witnessing wild celebrations from English football pundits but not everyone feels that the Three Lions’ win was justified.
According to former World Cup winner Diego Maradona, England were lucky to win the game as he claimed that Colombia had been robbed out a deserved victory.
Putting all the blame on the referee(Geiger) for the night, Maradona said: “I saw a monumental theft,
“I apologise to all the Colombian people, but they must know the players are not to blame.
“It is the man who decides who the referee is who is to blame. A man like that (Geiger) should not be put in charge of a game of that magnitude.
“With all due respect, Pierluigi Collina, as the man who designates the referees, he is very bad. He must apologise to the Colombian people.
“The referee will know a lot about baseball, but he has no idea about football. The Colombian players asked for VAR and he did not give it to them.”
But not everyone was happy with the Argentine’s rant about the wrongdoing and former England footballer Gary Lineker decided to take matters into his own hands.
Instead of going into an argument with Maradona, Lineker just posted two sentences on Twitter which was enough to put a lid on Diego.
Lineker wrote: “The sheer effrontery from the fella who punched one in. You’ve got to hand it to him.”
