Fikayo Tomori, Kante & Wijnaldum Liverpool vs Chelsea

Gini Wijnaldum has been a key figure in Liverpool’s success over the past few seasons but the midfielder is leaving Anfield as a free agent this summer. And according to many experts, Klopp needs to bring in a proper replacement if Liverpool are expecting to climb to the top of the Premier League table next season.

Liverpool have failed to make him agree to a new deal and as per the latest reports, the Dutch international is set to join FC Barcelona in the coming months.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Georginio Wijnaldum’s agent today in Barcelona to meet with Barça. The agreement is set to be completed until June 2024, confirmed. Gini is open to accept lower salary to join FCB, same as Sergio Agüero.”

Now with Wijnaldum gone, many people have been asking if Liverpool have enough time and resources to bring in a world-class replacement for the 30-year-old before the new season begins.

A number of players like James Ward-Prowse and Youri Tielmans have already been linked with a move to Liverpool in the summer and according to Noel Whelan, Liverpool will have to spend money in the transfer market and replace Gini Wijnaldum if they wish to challenge the two Manchester clubs for the Premier League title next season.

When asked if Liverpool can bring in a big name, Noel Whelan told Football Insider: “Yeah, of course.

“They are losing Wijnaldum. They need to replace him but that will be difficult because he’s been brilliant for them. If they want to compete with the Manchester clubs, who will strengthen this summer, they will have to match them.

“Man City and Man United will spend big money on big players and Liverpool have to match that. They have a good squad but you always need better players coming in to challenge. Look at Man City’s squad, that’s frightening.

“If they want to contend with that, they need better players and a bigger squad. Man City’s second team could qualify for the Champions League. If you have any aspirations of beating them next season, Liverpool need to show that they mean business.”

Liverpool have managed to finish in the top four so they will be getting a £58million boost for securing a place in next season’s Champions League. Hence, spending money on a proper replacement for Gini Wijnaldum should not be a major concern for Jurgen Klopp.

But the midfield area is not going to be the only concern for the Liverpool boss since he also needs to strengthen the attacking areas before the new season begins.
