Here’s one big reason why Donny van de Beek had a poor outing vs West Ham United

Man United progressed to the next round of the FA Cup by beating West Ham United 1-0 at home and midfielder Donny van de Beek got a rare start for the Red Devils.

Donny van de Beek has played very little football so far this season, primarily because Bruno Fernandes has been in outstanding form for Man United. But sadly, whenever he’s played, he’s done very little to impress his manager.

Tuesday’s outing was no different as the Dutch international could only manage 33 passes during his time on the pitch and even Hammers keeper Lukasz Fabianski had more touches than him.

Van De Beek eventually had to be replaced by Bruno Fernandes and speaking on the midfielder’s performance, Mark Hughes explained that his teammates do not seem to have full faith on the summer signing just yet.

“It looks like they don’t trust him with the ball yet,” Hughes told Talksport, as reported by The Independent.

“I haven’t seen a great deal of movement, I haven’t seen little movements to get in pockets of space, even though you suspect that’s the player he is and those are the areas he wants to work in.

“He’s been disappointing again. He’s playing for Manchester United, a huge club, he’s got to show more than he’s showing at the moment.

“You want to give the boy a chance, and he probably feels a bit aggrieved that he hasn’t had a run of games, he’s probably feeling a bit hard done by. But you have to say, given what he’s produced in the time he’s had, he doesn’t deserve more than that. So he’s got to show more.”

Donny van de Beek has had to struggle to find game time this season and after looking at his performance on Tuesday, the 23-year-old still has a lot of work to do if he wishes to become a regular in the starting line-up.

Fernandes and Pogba are above the Dutchman in the pecking order right now but there’s a possibility he could move up the ladder next season if Paul Pogba wants to move out during the summer transfer window.
