Liverpool might have been one of the best teams in Europe this season but it seems as if the busy festive season is finally catching up with Jurgen Klopp’s men.

The Reds might have a trailblazing attacking lineup but it seems that with each passing game, the manager is losing defenders.

Joe Gomez fractured his ankle during the win against Burnley and the centre-back will only return in the new year.

And now Klopp has lost yet another defender after the 1-0 win over Napoli.

This time it is Joel Matip who has fractured a collarbone and is now expected to be out of action for atleast six weeks.

While Matip has not played regularly this season but the defender has filled in quite perfectly during the past couple of games in the absence of Dejan Lovren.

But now with Matip out of action, Jurgen Klopp has lost yet another backup defender.

Liverpool released a statement on the club’s website which read:

“Matip was taken to hospital following the fixture and further assessment deemed an operation is required,”

“Early indications suggest the centre-back is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though that is dependent on how Matip responses to his treatment and rehabilitation programmes.”

The injury to Joel Matip means that going into the game against Manchester United this weekend, Liverpool have only two fit centre-backs – Van Dijk and Dejan Lovren.

Apart from Joel Matip, Trent Alexander-Arnold is also expected to miss the game against Manchester United after he picked up a foot injury during the Champions League win vs Napoli.
