Liverpool take on Man United at Old Trafford on Sunday and Joel Matip has been fighting a race against time to make himself fit.

The defender has been a mainstay at the back for the Reds and he along with Virgil Van Dijk have been impenetrable at the back for one and a half seasons now.

But Joel Matip recently picked up a knock which forced him to miss the last two matches and he was also a doubt for Man United vs Liverpool clash.

Now though, Liverpool’s official website have released a statement saying that the defender has returned back to training and should be available for selection this weekend.

“Joel Matip resumed training at Melwood on Tuesday morning after recovering from a knock sustained prior to the international break,” the statement read.

“The issue, picked up during the 1-0 win at Sheffield United on September 28, ruled the centre-back out of the Reds’ meetings with FC Salzburg and Leicester City.

“However, Matip took part in this morning’s session alongside his teammates as Jürgen Klopp’s side get ready for Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.”

In the absence of Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren paired up with Van Dijk in defence but now that the regular feature has returned, Lovren will move back to the bench.

Apart from Matip, Alisson has also returned back to full training after picking up an injury on the very first day of the new season.

“Alisson Becker also trained with Liverpool’s goalkeepers as he closes in on a return to action following a calf injury.” the statement added.

Now though it remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp choose to bring back Alisson in place of Adrian in such a high profile encounter.
