Liverpool already have a world-class centre-back in the form of Virgil Van Dijk but now Jurgen Klopp is out in the market looking for a suitable partner.

Last season it was Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren who took turns to partner Van Dijk in defence but everyone knows for a fact that these two players are perhaps the weakest links in the side.

Some reports have claimed that Liverpool have been keeping tabs on Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt but bringing him on board is no easy feat.

As a result of this, it is being claimed that the Reds have now entered the race to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

According to the Metro, ‘Liverpool have made contact with Koulibaly’s agent, Fali Ramadani, to ask about availability of the defender.

‘The Reds have been informed the deal is possible, as Jurgen Klopp searches for a long-term partner for Virgil van Dijk.

‘Liverpool have considered their own Joe Gomez as Van Dijk’s partner, but have also tracked Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt.’

Kalidou Koulibaly has been a long-standing interest for Manchester United and they too will look towards him in case they fail to sign de Ligt.

Napoli though have made it clear that they will only sanction a sale for Kalidou Koulibaly if a club is willing to pay £100 million.

And this is where Man United have a slight edge over rivals Liverpool.

The Reds spent a lot of money last year in signing the likes of Alisson and Van Dijk and experts have some serious doubts whether the management will agree to shell out such a big amount this summer.

Man United, on the other hand, have the money to spare as Solskjaer will be given a substantial transfer kitty to bring in reinforcements so paying a £100 million for Kalidou Koulibaly should not be too much of a headache for the Old Trafford outfit.
