Recently, there have been reports claiming the Premier League could be a 22-team tournament next season as Leeds United and West Brom could both be handed promotions.

Leeds United are currently on top of the Championship table while the Baggies are second meaning they will get an automatic qualification if the league ended right now.

And since finishing the remaining matches is proving to be a big challenge with each passing day, there have been suggestions made to the board that both these clubs be given entry to the next season’s Premier League.

But as per Football Insider, the authorities are not too keen to entertain this idea since most of the club’s in the top division are not delighted at the prospect of playing more games.

The report claims: “Any hope Leeds United and West Brom may have had of being part of a 22-team Premier League next season is all but over, Football Insider understands.

“A Premier League source has told Football Insider that it has been suggested again in recent days but is not considered a viable solution…

“There is no appetite among clubs for four more matches in an already heavily congested fixture list that is set to be under further strain in a 2020-21 season likely to kick off later and be shoehorned into a tighter timeframe.”

This might be really disheartening news for Leeds United and West Brom but for the clubs who are facing relegation in the Premier League, the news is really promising.

The Eredivisie has just ended their current season without declaring a champion or making relegations which could be the method followed by the Premier League in case they cannot restart the season in time to finish their remaining 92 games.

This means clubs like AFC Bournemouth, Norwich and Aston Villa will get one more chance to play in the top division. But if the games were to resume, Watford and West Ham United could be in for a real nervy few weeks since they are currently out of the bottom three by virtue of just goal difference.
