The SPFL have managed to pass a resolution to end the current Premiership season with immediate effect but now they must decide on how to do the other needfuls – like naming the champions and the relegated teams.

While most people feel relegation should be scrapped this season and at the same time, Celtic FC should be named the current champions since they have a 13 point lead at the top of the league table.

But according to Gers legend Arthur Numan, the SPFL should follow in the footsteps of the Dutch and not declare the champions for the ongoing season.

He told the Sunday Post: “I know the situation in Scotland isn’t as clear-cut as in Holland.

“So maybe they should follow the Dutch lead, declare Celtic the No. 1 team in the country and give them entry into the Champions League. But, as is the case in Holland, don’t call them champions. That would mean Celtic would not have won nine-in-a-row. They’d have to start again next season to claim that championship. I think maybe this is the right way.

“That kind of scenario would anger and frustrate Celtic players and supporters, and I totally get that. I’d feel the same way if Celtic was my team. The decision has been made in Holland and it is very frustrating from an AZ Alkmaar point of view. We wanted to be able to push Ajax. The pressure would have been on them.

“It means that Ajax have been declared the No.1 team in Holland, but we both get entry into the Champions League, if and when that resumes for the 2020-21 season.

“But they have not been awarded the title. No Championships have been handed out. Also, FC Utrecht have just missed out on a European place because they have played a game less. And the Dutch Cup Final between Feyenoord and FC Utrecht has also been cancelled. There has been no relegation and no promotion.

“I think it’s right no teams have been relegated. But at least one team should have been allowed to come up from the First Division.

“But now we need to move on and the focus of the whole country, in terms of football, is to be ready for the new season, hopefully starting around the beginning of September.”

Will the SPFL follow the Eredivisie?

Numan is currently a scout at AZ Alkmaar, who were level on points with Ajax at the top of the Dutch league so clearly he has a better picture of the emotions amongst the Eredivisie clubs

UEFA have made it clear that while they will consider the smaller leagues wrapping up early but these countries have also been urged to try and finish their remaining matches so they can send their clubs to European competitions without any major problems.

But if the SPFL chooses not to play their remaining matches then it could be a real cause of concern for Rangers FC as they are still playing in the Europa League.

Celtic FC, on the other hand, will be eagerly waiting for the board to declare them as champions since catching up is now practically impossible.

So right now the SPFL is clearly under tremendous pressure to find the best possible solution to end the 2019-20 season but one’s thing’s for sure, no matter what the answer, one team or the other is bound to object.
