Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League after the Reds suffered a shock loss at Anfield in the second leg of their Round of 16 clash vs Atletico Madrid.

The Merseyside outfit went down thanks to an aggregate scoreline of 4-2 meaning they are now only awaiting to win just one major trophy this season.

Atletico Madrid came into the second leg with a 1-0 advantage but that lead was washed off thanks to a 43rd-minute strike from Wijnaldum. But following that, Simeone’s men defended their box with all their fervency and in the end, the Spanish side won the match 3-2 thanks to goals from Llorente and Alvaro Morata.

And speaking after the match, the Liverpool manager has revealed what was the basic thing they did wrong on Wednesday despite playing some fine football.

The German boss said after the match, as quoted: “I think everybody who saw the game tonight knows that it could have been different. I loved our first 90 or 95 minutes, however long it was.

“Our first, main mistake tonight was that we scored the second goal too late, we scored in extra time and not in the 90 minutes, so that was our fault.

“When you see a team like Atletico packed with world-class players in their positions and they play the way they play, it is the most difficult thing to do, to face. That’s how it is.

“We did exceptionally well, we played exactly in the spaces we have to play. I loved the football we played.

“We caused them more problems than probably people thought after the first game.

“Against a defensive set-up like that, to cause a team that many problems is really exceptional, so I loved that.”

In all fairness, Liverpool should have picked up an easy win in this match but thanks to a combination of things, the Anfield outfit have crashed out.

The first and the major thing is the heroics of Jan Oblak who made a number of great saves in order to keep Liverpool at bay. And then there were also some missed chances from Liverpool wherein players like Salah and Mane failed to convert their chances.
