Rangers FC manager Steven Gerrard is looking to strengthen his defensive line for the upcoming season and one of the players that he is currently looking at is Martin Skrtel.

Martin Skrtel has played alongside Gerrard for a number of years at Liverpool but in 2016 he moved to Fenerbahce from the Anfield outfit for a fee of 6 million euros.

At the Turkish club, he signed a three-year deal which came to an end last month which means Martin Skrtel is currently a free agent and Rangers want to bring him on board.

The 34-year-old has been linked with the Gers for a couple of weeks now and recently the player has himself admitted that the Premiership outfit hold an interest in signing him for the 2019-20 season.

Speaking about his future, the central defender said: “There are offers, but I’m not in a hurry to choose my new team. I have some criteria and I have to be patient.

“My manager had talks with Başakşehir, Fenerbahçe, Parma, Olympiakos and Glasgow Rangers. But I can’t say anything more for now.”

This is not the first time that Steven Gerrard has tried to sign Martin Skrtel as last summer too, the Gers boss went after the defender.

Now though being a free agent means Gerrard can try to convince his former partner at length but all said and done most pundits believe that Rangers will have to offer him a hefty salary if they want him to come on board.

Joe Worrall has head back to Nottingham Forest after his loan deal expired this summer which means Gerrard does need to bring in some new faces in defence.

While getting Martin Sktrel will undoubtedly be a good move but some pundits are clearly not happy with this idea.

The Gers have brought in George Edmunson from Oldham this summer who is expected to be a mainstay at the club next season. But the experts feel that if Martin Skrtel comes in then the youngster could be warming the benches instead of playing week in and week out.

Also, they do not like to idea of paying a hefty amount of wage to someone like Martin Skrtel who is all but 34 years of age.
