Chelsea take on Newcastle United in the Premier League next weekend and it looks like Lampard would be without the services of Mateo Kovacic.

The former Real Madrid star has so far featured in every Premier League game for the Blues and during the international break, he started in Croatia’s EURO qualifier vs Wales.

But during injury time of the first half, it was Mateo Kovacic who lost the ball which resulted in Gareth Bale equalising for Wales. And if this was not enough, the midfielder ws injured during this move and had to be taken off.

And now Chelsea have confirmed on their official website that the summer signing has indeed picked up an injury.

The Blues’ website mentioned: “Tottenham’s Ben Davies went through the back of Kovacic, emerged with the ball and played in Gareth Bale who slotted an equaliser.

“Kovacic stayed down, and after treatment he limped off and didn’t emerge for the second half.”

Mateo Kovacic has so far featured in 11 games for Chelsea this season which is a clear indication that Lampard has favoured in midfield alongside Jorginho.

And his absence for the Newcastle clash could be a very serious blow for the Blues boss since N’Golo Kante is also out with an injury.

The Frenchman is recovering from a groin injury and is facing a race against time to make himself fit before the Magpies come to town.

But in case both Mateo Kovacic and Kante miss out on the Chelsea vs Newcastle clash then Lampard will have no other option but to name Ross Barkley in midfield alongside Jorginho and Mason Mount.

Apart from Kovacic, youngster Ethan Ampadu also picked up an injury during the same match but as per reports, the loanee’s injury is not too serious.

The Chelsea website wrote: “…Bruno Petkovic clattered into Ampadu from behind as our youngster headed the ball.

The Croatian striker was fortunate to only receive a yellow card, while Ampadu was replaced by Bristol City’s Joe Morrell after a long period of treatment.

“Happily, the man on loan at RB Leipzig was later pictured on his feet again in the Welsh dugout.”
