Arsenal sacked Unai Emery as their manager a couple of months ago and right now, it’s Mikel Arteta who is the favourite to become the next Gunners boss.
Mikel Arteta is currently assisting Pep Guardiola at Manchester City but there have been reports that the former Gunners player is very close to taking charge of his former club(when this article was written).
A number of people had been considered for the role of the next Arsenal manager but it seems like Mikel Arteta is getting the job primarily because he’s been learning the tricks of the trade from Pep Guardiola.
According to Stan Collymore though, the Gunners are making a gaffe by appointing Arteta as their next manager since the Spaniard has done very little noticeable work as the No 2 to the Man City boss.
“[He’s a] nice lad,” Stan Collymore said[as reported by The Daily Star].
“You’d take him home to your mum, the epitome of what Arsenal have been. But he has been gifted a halo by his association with Pep Guardiola.
“It is a massive red herring. I have seen nothing from him on the touchline.
“Or anything revolutionary from Pep’s teams to justify his No.2 being given one of the biggest jobs in English football.
“It is borderline absurd. If he has never played for Arsenal would he be in the running for this job? No.
“They should go and ask the question of an experienced manager. I keep banging the drum for Diego Simeone.
“Arteta is one of the last vestiges of cuddly Arsenal, lovely football, tiki-taka, possession-based, and won’t win a bean with them.”
It is very much evident that Mikel Arteta is not the overall favourite as the heir to Unai Emery but the bitter truth is that not many big managers would have been ready to take charge of Arsenal.
The North London club have lost their sheen during the past couple of years and this season they have been particularly poor and not many high-profile managers would be eager to do a build-up job at the Emirates.
