Rangers FC midfielder Stephen Kelly has impressed the coaching staff at Ibrox, especially during his loan spell at Ayr United this season.

The 20-year-old is a product of the Rangers academy and last summer he was sent out on loan to Ayr by Gerrard, in order to get more game time. During the 2019-20 season, Kelly managed to feature in 25 Championship games, scoring five and assisting three goals at the club.

And according to Alan Hutton, the coaching staff at Rangers FC are really happy with the development of the youngster.

Hutton told Football Insider: “You always get excited about the young players, I’ve heard a few things about him from Peter and that as one of the exciting players coming through.

“This is ideal in my opinion – boys going out and playing 30, 35 games a season, coming back battle-hardened, that’s what they need. I’ve been there before.

“See when you’re going into the first-team for the first time, it’s like a shock to the system, it’s difficult. If you’ve gone out for seasons and played and you know what to expect, it makes you feel so much better.

“For the youngsters, it’s a great move. Of course, he’s one for the future – to go out on loan in a tough league and get a young player of the year, it speaks volumes. I’m sure Rangers will be watching him very closely.”

This statement has prompted many to believe that Stephen Kelly is ready to perform on the big stage and Gerrard might plan to offer him a first-team role at Ibrox next season.

While this will surely be a great success story but we do not think the central midfielder is anywhere close to playing week in week out for Rangers FC.

Gerrard has players like Arfield, Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo who all do the exact same job as Kelly meaning there’s every chance the Teddy Bears might look to send the youngster out on yet another loan spell.
